About
Hi, I’m Stephanie, a costume designer and professor of costume and fashion studies at Kendall College of Art and Design (KCAD) in Grand Rapids, MI. I hold a BFA in fashion design from Columbia College Chicago, and will be graduating with an MFA in costume design from Academy of Art University in August 2019. I started my career as a patternmaker before launching my own custom bridal and alterations business Woodley Bridal, which I ran for four years. I’ve always embraced both the technical and creative aspects of any design job; whether working for a single bride or an ensemble production, my focus is always on the details.
In 2015, I began teaching design and construction courses where I emphasize quality craftsmanship and originality of ideas, principles that I strive to lead by example with in my own work. Throughout my teaching career I’ve led costume collaborations between KCAD and local organizations, including The Grand Rapids Film Festival, The Grand Rapids Public Museum, and Opera Grand Rapids (where I’ve also worked as their costume designer and costume assistant on several productions). I’m passionate about designing with purpose, creating visual connections between character and costume, working with innovative materials, and always with an emphasis on quality and construction.
While I am one of the lucky ones whose job is their hobby, some of my non-work related interests include being a mediocre pianist, venturing out on road trips, and managing my cat’s social media presence.
