Costume design and construction for character of Queen Elizabeth l for screenplay Orlando

Orlando, a young aristocrat in the late 16th century, is ordered by Queen Elizabeth I to never grow old. The narrative follows his life across 400 years, from the 16th century to the cusp of the new millenium. Along the way Orlando falls into mysterious periods of deep sleep and eventually awakens as a woman in the 18th century. This gender reversal brings about new experiences and challenges as Orlando must now cope with and navigate through the female experience.
Developed from historical Edwardian corset patterns, this wearable and sculptural corset explores the relationship between the nostalgic and restrictive nature of women’s fashion throughout history. Made from copper wire, this corset was built using a combination of textile techniques, including crochet, weaving, and plaiting.

5 piece set of Elizabethan underpinnings, developed from historical 16th century patterns. Specialty techniques include:
-embroidery covered eyelets
-handsewn waistband with cartridge pleating

CHEMISE - calico cotton, cotton embroidery floss
CORSET - floral weave textile, coutil, German plastic boning, dupioni (binding), embroidered eyelets
FARTHINGALE - cotton broadcloth, steel hoop wire, cotton twill tape
BUMROLL - quilted textile, twill tape, cotton batting
PETTICOAT - diamond weave textile (medium weight)
Designed for the character Lennie Small from Of Mice and Men by John Steinbeck.
Materials Include: papier-mâché, silk gauze, styrofoam, acrylic paints, leather and jute cording, elastic, foam padding (interior)
