Orlando, a young aristocrat in the late 16th century, is ordered by Queen Elizabeth I to never grow old. The narrative follows his life across 400 years, from the 16th century to the cusp of the new millenium. Along the way Orlando falls into mysterious periods of deep sleep and eventually awakens as a woman in the 18th century. This gender reversal brings about new experiences and challenges as Orlando must now cope with and navigate through the female experience.
